How to dilute the power of politicians

This article was inspired by one of my close friends, Michael Warnken. He has a great solution to most of the problems we face here in California, in regards to government.

Steven Greenhut: How to dilute the power of politicians

By STEVEN GREENHUT
Special to the Register

SACRAMENTO – When I lived in Iowa, I was an average citizen, and, one day, I had a question for the governor's office for an article I was writing for a small newsletter. I called the Capitol number and was transferred to an aide, who responded with something to this effect: "Why don't you come and ask the governor yourself? Are you free next Monday at 11:30?"

When I got there at 11:30, the governor was waiting and gave me a half-hour of his time.

Getting an audience with Gov. Jerry Brown – or any other recent California governor – would be nearly impossible for an average citizen, and, indeed, it is tough enough to get such access even for someone writing for a major newspaper. The chief executive of a state with 39 million people – especially a state wrestling with a $26.6 billion budget deficit – usually won't have time for Molly from Modesto, even if the governor of a state with 3 million people might occasionally be able to meet with Steve from Des Moines.

But while it's unrealistic to expect average voters to get a visit with their governor, they should have a chance to meet with their state representative. Unfortunately, California's residents have only a slim chance of meeting with their Assembly members, the ones who are supposed to be the people's advocates.

Iowans, for instance, are represented by 103 members of the House of Representatives, whereas Californians are represented by 80 members of the Assembly. Simple math: There's one representative for every 29,151 Iowans (using 2008 data) and one Assembly member for every 459,458 Californians (now 483,000). There's an elected representative in New Hampshire's house for every 3,290 Granite State residents, the lowest ratio of such representation in the nation.

I gave a talk last weekend at the state Libertarian Party Convention at Lake Tahoe. I spoke about the failure of California Republicans and focused on the party's failure to end redevelopment agencies. Activist Michael Warnken approached me afterward and handed me the above data. He said it made his point that the continuation of redevelopment, which Gov. Brown wants to end, is a "representation problem."

To Warnken, most of California's ills are the result of an insufficient number of representatives. The fewer the representatives, the less likely they are to be held accountable by local voters, and the easier they are to be controlled by well-financed interest groups. He argued that an Assembly that was closer to the people would have been less likely, when voting on ending redevelopment agencies, to side with developers who routinely abuse property rights.

Warnken's resolution calling for increasing the number of legislative districts and representatives passed overwhelmingly at the convention Sunday.

"You name the problem," he said. "This is the solution."

I'm rarely swayed by easy fixes to complex problems, but Warnken's idea of expanding representation for California offers something refreshing and thoughtful – an idea worth mulling over by reform-minded Californians of all political stripes.

Consider that Los Angeles County, with its nearly 10 million residents, has five county supervisors. Each one represents roughly 2 million people. It's absurd, really. In Orange County and San Diego County, each supervisor represents about 600,000 residents. Is it any wonder that interest groups have an inordinate amount of sway?

Increasing representation would reduce the power of special interests. These groups like smaller numbers of representatives, because their money plays the biggest role. Citizen groups have a tough time influencing such elections. And then the supervisors, or Assembly members or state senators are far more beholden to the big-money players. They don't need to listen to average voters, not that the average voter has any realistic chance of engaging the politician. With fewer reps there's so much to govern, so unaccountable bureaucratic officials end up making more decisions.

Expanding representation reduces the power of money. Additional seats mean an easier chance for voters to kick the bums out. Using Warnken's data – New Hampshire had a 34.5 percent turnover rate in its 2008 statehouse races, meaning that more than one of three incumbents lost their seats. In California, that number was zero, and it has rarely been above 2.5 percent.

Realistically, the redistricting reform that passed will not change things very much. Increasing the number of representatives also creates better opportunities for third parties, which bring a broader range of ideas and attitudes into the Capitol.

Sure, increasing representation will result in having more politicians, but nothing says that they need to be granted bigger staffs and budgets. By diluting the power of politicians, we would likely see an increase in citizen-legislators driven by ideas rather than paychecks, perks and power. Reformers who are upset by the myriad abuses in California's overused initiative process, might want to consider the representation alternative. Californians take everything to the ballot box because they have such little opportunity to fix things through the Legislature. Fixing the Legislature would fix the initiative situation.

Every day I get emails and phone calls from Californians dismayed by the state's structural budget deficits, its enormous unfunded retirement liabilities, the declining quality of public services, a struggling economy strangled by a punitive regulatory regime, and by the political influence of interest groups. Most of the "fixes" they offer have some modicum of merit, but never get to the heart of the problem. But the idea of expanding representation in the Legislature and elsewhere – although only a thought experiment at this stage – to me seems brilliant.

Unlike the reforms proposed by modern-day good-government types – redistricting, open primaries, constitutional conventions, elimination of two-thirds vote requirements, a part-time Legislature – it's not designed to yield specific political results, in the way that the above-mentioned reformers try to change election systems to, say, elect more "moderates" like them. Californians still would have more liberals than conservatives, but those representatives would be more independent and responsive to the average citizen.

This idea won't fix everything, but it's the most promising idea I've heard in a long time.

Top Down Vs. Bottom Up

I've been told repeatedly the Libertarian party of CA is a bottom up organization.

Grassroots Members are the decision makers, movers and shakers. On the other hand, so the story goes, leadership just nods their heads and agrees to be agreeable.

I have yet to see this kind of 'bottom up' organization succeed.

Just to clarify, the definition of 'bottom up' here is, 'let everyone do what they want to do, no matter what'. My personal definition of Top Down Organization is, 'leadership works harder than anyone else, no matter what'.

I believe true leaders must lead by example. There is no other way to be a true leader.

And that's why I've chosen to take a leadership role in the California Libertarian Party.

I plan on leading by example, in both the amount of effort I put in, but by the real, measurable and deliverable results I bring to the Party. I am committed to doing whatever it takes to ensure our party succeeds.

Many people ask me why be a Member of the Libertarian Party?

Why be involved in politics?

Why even waste your time trying, (because it won't make a difference)?

That's easy.

I joined the LP because I believe in Libertarian Principles.

I believe in a very small, non-intrusive government that protects our rights.

I like it that Libertarians are consistent on most points.

Republicans and Democrats change sides or views constantly.

Libertarians don’t.

The reason why Libertarians keep getting whipped by Republicans and Democrats is not that they have any good ideas. Its because they are far better organized.

Once we are organized as well as they are, our Libertarian ideas and insights can win the day and get California and America back on track.

This is not an easy task.

It will take the proverbial blood, sweat and tears.

Many before us have given their lives for the idea of true freedom and liberty.

This is the least I can do.

Ready to Register some Libertarians!

I just picked up 12,000 voter registration forms from the Secretary of State's office. If you need some voter registration forms and you are in the Sacramento area, feel free to give me a call. If you are out of the Sacramento Area you can go to your local county Registrar of Voters office to pick some up. FYI- Local county offices will usually only give out 2,000 at a time!

Remember, the LP needs 103,000 registered in CA by 2014. Let's get it done by 2012!!

Putting it All Together

*Recorded Conference Call*

“The law of Attraction is working for you every second, minute and hour of the day with the materials you give it.” –Invisible Truth

So how does this work? And how can I choose to manifest my desires in my life?

It all starts with understanding that there have been laws or principles set into place and if you follow these laws or principles you will reap what you choose at an accelerated rate. Understand this information first. These laws are as constant as gravity.

Your conscious mind is the materials that your subconscious mind uses to create your outer and inner world.

Let me give you an analogy:

You have two hoses. One flows out dirty water and the other flows out pristine clean clear water. Now these two hose represent your conscious mind, something that you control. You also have a five gallon bucket and the inside of that bucket represents your subconscious mind, which you do not control and does nothing but create. The outside of the bucket represent your outer and inner world. Fill your bucket with dirty water, the outside of the bucket overflows with dirty water. Fill your bucket with pristine water, the outside of the bucket fills with pristine water. You choose. Now do you choose a pristine life? Or a life of dirt or unhappiness. The good thing about how this works, is that no matter how bad things seem at this moment or how full your bucket is with dirty water, you can change it and if your bucket is overflowing with dirt. You can change hoses and in time all the dirt will overflow out and will be replaced with pristine water that will overflow in your life.

Step # 1

Accept full responsibility for everything that has and will happen to you in your life.

You filled your bucket up with something and your bucket overflowed with something of the same magnitude, of the same vibration.

Right actions in the future are the best apologies for bad actions in the past.

- Tryon Edwards

Take responsibility for everything is your life. Don’t blame God, people or anything else. Every situation has been manifested by us. I know what you are probably thinking, what about the times when someone else hurt you? They did something to harm you that was out of your control, right? Well actually, you allowed the situation to happen. You allowed that person into your life. You we’re there in that moment, at that time.

It’s called taking a victim mentality, to blame others for your problems. Taking a victim mentality is very detrimental to your advancement. By taking a victim mentality you are opening the door for a similar situation to happen again. A victim mentality elicits feelings of anger, hate, remorse and fear, thus attracting more of that into your life.

By accepting responsibility you are acknowledging that you have the power to change. That you have the power to dictate how your life turns out. You have the power to decide for yourself.

Step # 2

Give enough time to allow the dirty water to overflow out of your bucket and be replaced with the pristine water to overflow out into your life.

Most people put the pristine hose in the bucket and did not understand that you have to allow enough time to get the dirt to overflow out. Instead they put the pristine hose in and when the dirt continued to overflow out, they put the dirty hose or the negative right back in the bucket. You have to allow enough time to replace the dirt with the pristine.

Keep the positive or the pristine water flowing and the negative or dirt flows out. There isn’t enough room for anything but the positive if you keep filling it with positive. Remember, the conscious mind is the materials that the subconscious mind uses to create your outer and inner world. Now the conscious mind, you control and the subconscious mind does nothing but create your outer and inner world with the materials you give it. So make sure you fill it with the right materials. Your subconscious mind is creating every second, minute and hour of the day. So feed your subconscious mind with the proper materials to create the pristine life you choose to have.

When you give you will receive. Give your subconscious mind the good materials to create with and your subconscious mind will use those materials to create good things in your life.

Put out as much positive out into the universe as possible.

If you continually fill your bucket with the positive, your bucket will overflow with positive. But remember, as you fill your bucket with pristine water the dirty water has to flow out. This is the natural process.

Step # 3

Memorize the 9 laws or principles.

The more of the laws or principles that you have working together the stronger the energy force is that you are putting out into the universe.

1. Live in the now

2. Thought

3. Spoken Word

4. Belief

5. Work

6. Be Thankful

7. Forgiveness

8. Giving and receiving

9. Environment

One of the best analogies for this is that of a car’s engine. Imagine you have 9 cylinders in your car and each of those cylinders represents one of the 9 laws and principles. Each of those cylinders takes a special type of fuel that matches each of those principles. For example, the belief cylinder must have a fuel that believes that you are already at your destination for it to run. The work cylinder must have your consistent action for it to run. The environment cylinder must be surrounded by positive energy for it to run. Ect. Ect. If you are omitting any of the requirements for a specific cylinder to run then you will be losing horsepower or energy and momentum. This is what we call firing on all nines.

Using all nine laws and principles in your life will allow you to manifest whatever it is that you desire at a much faster rate with precision accuracy. Use all nine laws and principle synergistically with each other and the future you desire is not a matter of if, but when.

Step # 4

Choose to be aware and conscious.

Movement of directed and controlled energy that moves in your favor.

Be aware of what you are filling your bucket with. You can only think and speak what you see and hear. What you think, speak, see and hear are what you fill your bucket with. What you fill your bucket with will determine what you manifest into your life.

Step # 5

Feed the senses of your soul first.

Most people believe that by feeding the senses of the external first they will receive peace and happiness. By feeding the senses of the body first you will have short lived happiness and your internal senses will starve. Your internal senses become numb and you become unaware of your God or universe in your life. You close the door to the Invisible Truth that delivers unlimited abundance.

Feeding the senses of the external body becomes an addiction. That addiction starves the soul.

You feed the external with, pride, envy, grudge, anger, revenge, sloth, greed, gluttony and more.

Second half Romans Chapter 8 Verse 31, “if God be for us, who can be against us.”

To feed the internal, be humble, thankfulness, gratefulness, joy and happiness for the things that you and others have. In all things love is always appropriate. Anger will melt away. Darkness of revenge will be taken over by the light of forgiveness. Low vibrating slothful ways will be washed away with high vibrating energy of passion, enthusiasm and zeal for good things. Greed will be transformed into wise cheerful giving or generosity without expectation of return from the receiver. The gluttony to feed the addiction of the body will become non-existent and self control and temperance will stand high in its place.

When these things happen the universe will open the gates of abundance wide.

The high vibrating energy will consume your life.

Humility, thankfulness or gratefulness, love, patience, forgiveness, a passion for high frequency, cheerful giving or generosity, self control, temperance, things that are true, honest, just, pure, lovely and of good report. These things feed the soul.

Meditation also feeds the soul. Prayer feeds the soul.

Mathew Chapter 6 Verse 33, “but seek ye first the kingdom of God in his righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you.”

It says in the bible that we should seek first the kingdom of God and all things shall be given to us.

Then where is the kingdom of God?

Luke Chapter 17 Verse 21, “the kingdom of God is inside you.”

Once you fully accept that the kingdom of God is inside you, you harness the power of God and the Universe and open doors to unlimited possibilities.

You are the Kingdom of God. Your soul or spirit is the kingdom of God. Feed the senses of your soul first and you will find true happiness and abundance.

“Your most precious, valued possessions and your greatest powers are invisible and intangible. No one can take them. You, and you alone, can give them.”
